Well, the business world is changing. It used to be enough to open up a brick and mortar business, work hard at building your business, and eventually, enjoy the fruits of your labor. Now, it is imperative that you learn how to create a website for your business.
In the current business environment, if you don’t have an online presence, you are facing an uphill battle. It is not as hard as it seems. But, it will take some effort and the right tools to succeed.
Do you have a minute for a quick story?
Several years ago, I was in the mortgage industry working as a loan officer. I learned quickly that I needed to establish some referral sources to feed me clients who needed mortgages. At that time in the industry, we were all 100% commissioned sales people. If you didn’t close a loan, you didn’t get paid.
Once I established myself in the industry, I decided to get my own license to open a mortgage brokerage. One day I was out in the field visiting real estate agents and saw one of my friends who was also a mortgage broker. I asked him how things were going and he said great now that he had a website for his business. He was getting several leads every week from the website. Now, I was intrigued. I asked him some questions about it and he said “You definitely need to learn how to create a website for your business.”
As time went on, I noticed other brokers had their own websites to promote their businesses. It seemed like a great way to increase referrals to my business so, I taught myself HTML which is the language you use to create websites.
I eventually put together what I thought was a good website, found a hosting company, and voila! My website was on the internet. I just knew that I would have all kinds of clients inquiring about using my company for their mortgage needs. Well, I waited and I waited and I waited and, I received a total of ZERO mortgage clients through my website.
I was confused because it made sense to have an online presence that would coordinate with my brick and mortar brokerage. And, I knew other brokers were having success with their own websites.
I feel like I am an intelligent person but, when I tried my hand at creating my own website, I was in over my head.
When I look back at my first attempt at creating a successful online business, I now see that I knew nothing about Search Engine Optimization, about creating quality content for my site, about using Social Media to promote your online presence or using long tail keywords that would help clients find your site when using search engines.
Having a website is a great first step for any business. But, there is more to learn in how to create a website for your business than just the website itself.
So, I did a little research
I was speaking with a real estate agent not too long ago and I asked him if he received any referrals through a website. He said that he got a few but, he felt like they came from ads he placed that had his web address on it.
He told me that most real estate companies offer you a website that has all of the homes listed for sale. But, it is not your own personal site. Sure, you can personalize it with your own information but it is basically the same site for every real estate agent that chooses to use it.
So, I did a little research and found out that these are called “agency specific sites”. These types of websites will have a database of all the homes and rentals that are listed from that company’s agents and broker. But, it is not your own website.
If a prospective client searches for a home on this type of website, they can find a home to look at but, it will give the listing agent’s contact info. And, if you don’t have a lot of listings, it makes it tough to get a lot of referrals from internet searches.
An online business for professionals
This got me thinking about how many professionals out in the business world could use good information on building a successful online business. Real estate agents, mortgage professionals, tax accountants, lawyers, employment recruiters, the list goes on…
There is so much competition for business that any advantage you have is a key to success. One important advantage is getting traffic to your website from people doing searches on the internet.
Here are some searches I did to see what kind of websites show up on the first page of Google:
- Should I get pre-approved for a mortgage
- Do I need a lawyer to prepare a will
- Best school districts in Western PA
- Can I deduct mortgage interest on my taxes
- Where can I get a resume for a job interview
- Do I need a home inspection when buying a home
If you are a professional who has a website, try searching in Google for different topics that prospective clients might search for. If your website does not show up on the first page, you are missing out on a lot of business. And, your competition is getting the business instead of you.
Keep in mind that the first couple of search results are usually paid ads. Below those you will find the organic search results. When you have a website, you want to show up on the first page or second at the most.
Think about when you have done a search for something on the internet. Did you go four or five pages deep to look for a product or service?
