Today I thought I would discuss how to use Social Media in business. First, a couple of statistics. As of 2019, close to 80% of the United States population has a social media account per www.statista.com. Facebook, which is the largest social network, has over 2 billion users worldwide.
In 2019, 48.2% of Baby Boomers, 77.5% of Generation X, and 90.4% of Millennials actively use social media per Infographics.
Marketers were asked how effective they thought social media was for their businesses. 73% felt like it was either very effective or somewhat effective.
As you can see, social networking is here to stay. And, if you want to remain competitive, you need to learn how to use Social Media in business.
Benefits of Social Media
A key to profitability in the online world is getting traffic to your website. The higher the number of visitors you get to view your site, the more possible it is to convert that traffic into customers.
One of the goals in social networking is to grow your network of friends and family so that when you post to your timeline, a lot of people will see your post. Now, not everyone in your network will want to read your posts but, if you create interesting content, you can get a significant number of your network to view your posts.
Once you get your network interested in your content, you want them to engage in your posts. Let’s look at the four types of engagement on Facebook.
The Facebook algorithms like content that receives engagement. So, your goal in business related content should be to get your network to engage with your posts. You want them to take action.
So, what are the benefits of Social Media?
- It gives you the opportunity to be in front of an audience.
- It brings attention and visitors to your website.
- It ultimately can help you create a brand.
Remember, success with an online business is predicated on getting traffic to your website. One way to get traffic is to leverage your social networks by creating engaging content that points them to your website.
By the way, if you work for someone else, make sure you check the company policy concerning Social Media.
Some Popular Social Networks
Facebook has over 2 billion users world wide and has become the most powerful of all the social networks. You can influence friends and family on a personal level. But, it is becoming increasingly used in business.
- You are able to create groups that target a certain audience.
- You can express your feelings in an article and if someone likes it, they can share it which enables your article to reach even more people.
- An even more focused way to use Facebook is to create a business page highlighting your products or services.
- There is Facebook Live that you can use to connect in real time with your network.
You can review products, add personal videos to speak with your audience, create training videos and articles, and utilize ad campaigns through Facebook. And, if your products or services are well liked, your friends and family will share your page with others extending your reach to even more possible customers.
LinkedIn is most recognized as a professional social network. It is probably best known for recruiting and searching for jobs. But, that is not all you can do with LinkedIn.
It is a great way to network with other individuals in your profession. You can also connect with complimentary professionals to your industry. An example would be a real estate agent connecting with a mortgage broker.
You can use LinkedIn to generate sales leads. You can even create an advertising campaign on LinkedIn.
If you are a professional or self employed, it is imperative that you create a LinkedIn profile and start to build a professional network of your own. Also, don’t be afraid to post your own content. Show off your expertise!
Twitter is popular because it tends to be more conversational and you can tweet in real time. What is a tweet you ask? Any content you post on Twitter is called a tweet. Entertainers, athletes, media personalities, and politicians all love Twitter because they can update their followers to daily events in real time.
But, Twitter is so much more. There are different ways to communicate with your followers.
- You can re-tweet. This means you share someone else’s tweet on your feed.
- You can reply to a post. This is a way to be more conversational with a group.
- You can Direct Message someone which is a way to connect privately.
- Twitter has an advertising platform that can target a certain audience.
- In business, you can use clever hashtags to promote products or use popular ones to extend your reach to people you might not even know.
The larger your network grows the further your influence can extend.
Instagram is a social network aimed at sharing photos and videos from your smart devices with your followers. It is owned by Facebook and is similar in nature by allowing you to follow people, like their posts, comment on their pictures, and you can direct message them.
Instagram is starting to gain a foothold with businesses. Especially, if you have a visually appealing type of business such as travel, beauty, real estate, automotive, etc.
A beautician can show their clients a new hairstyle, a travel agent can post pictures of a resort they are promoting, or a real estate agent can showcase a new home they just listed.
If you feel that Instagram will work with your business, you should create pictures or videos that will work with all social media platforms to get the most value from you campaigns.
These are just some of the ways on how to use social media in business.
